We Offer Many Options With Every Suit We Tailor
A suit is much more than simply a jacket and pants. At Milan Tailors we offer a number of options that can be selected by you to make each suit uniquely yours. Below is a brief outline of these options, and our staff will be happy to provide expert advice and explain what fits you best.
For Your Jacket
Length
There is a standard length for a suit jacket, and typically it lines up with the length of your arms. However, personally preference can come into play, as taller gentlemen may prefer a longer jacket while others prefer something a little shorter. What you select is your choice, but we will be there to help guide you.
Fit
Depending on your body type, the fit of your jacket will vary. For the slender among us, a “European” fit is considered flattering as it accentuates a triangular body shape. For most, the standard fit will apply, but everything is feasible, and a looser-fitting jacket is possible if requested.
Lapel
The size of your lapel is important not only to the look of the suit, but also to the types of ties that you can wear with it. Specifically, the widest part of your lapel will be equal to the largest width of tie. In today’s fashion, a thinner lapel is considered in fashion, but is also not considered very formal. Choose the lapel that best meets the needs of the suit; a formal suit requires a standard lapel, while a fun suit can go thin.
Vents
Vents are simple; there are three options. The first, and the single vent. A single vent will be in the middle of the suit jacket, and gives more play to the jacket when moving around. A double vent has two vents, which creates a “trap door” on the back of the jacket; this allows for the most freedom of movement in a suit jacket. The final option is no vent, but this is not recommended.
Cuff
The cuff of a suit jacket is one of the finer details that is often missed. Most suits, including many custom suits, simply have buttons sewn onto the end of the jacket sleeve. However, some prefer the finer detail of including buttons that can be buttoned or unbuttoned. This is commonly known as “surgeon’s cuffs”.
Liner
The liner of your jacket usually reflects the color of the jacket; however, this is an opportunity to be outrageous and understated at the same time. Many fashionably men consider vibrant colors – red, pink, yellow – for their jacket linings to reflect their style and savvy.
For Your Pants
Length
The length of a suit pant is standard, but personal preference can play a small influence on this component. Be sure to wear your dress shoes when you are being measured so our tailors can accommodate the height of your heels.
Fit
Much like the fit of the jacket, how suit pants fit will be determined by your personal style and body type. How your jacket is fit will normally determine how the pants should fit, as a tapered look should be consistent throughout.
Pleat
While many men today exclude a pleat, some men do prefer this look. When working with Milan Tailors, be sure to let them know what your style is. If you’re unsure, just ask, and we will be happy to match your pants to your personality and lifestyle.
Cuff
Just like the pleat, a cuff on the bottom of your pants has lost some of its mass appeal. However, unlike pleats, there is a slow movement back to the inclusion of a cuff. Once again, this is entirely up to your style, which is an exclusive benefit of getting a custom-tailored suit.
